About John Petrelli

A life tested in public—and rebuilt on purpose.

John brings middle and high school students more than a motivational moment. He brings a story of failure, mentorship, recovery, and the decisions that can turn a difficult chapter into a different future.

The story behind the message

Built from experience—not theory.

BEFORE JOHN PETRELLI WAS A SPEAKER, HE WAS THE STUDENT WHO DIDN'T BELIEVE IN HIMSELF.

Long before John Petrelli was speaking to students across the country, he was the kid struggling academically, lacked confidence, battled anger, and often felt like he was a complete failure.

Sports were supposed to be his escape—but failure followed him.

At just 4'11" entering high school, John dreamed of playing basketball. He tried out for the team and was cut three years in a row.

For years, John saw those experiences the way many students do:

Failure meant he wasn't good enough. Anger and frustration followed—and at 18 years old John found himself arrested and sitting in a jail cell.

Then a teacher saw something in John that he couldn't yet see in himself. That relationship helped change the trajectory of his life.

John eventually spent over 30 years as a performance coach, working with professional athletes, A-list celebrities, and some of the most recognizable people in the world.

But one of his greatest lessons of resilience would come when John suddenly became the one who needed help.

In 2021, John was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that left him paralyzed in the ICU. He went from a lifelong fitness professional to having to relearn how to walk.

It forced John to put into practice everything he had spent decades teaching others.

Change your perception. Pivot from the negative. Proceed forward.

Today, John is a multiple-time best-selling author and motivational speaker, but his student assemblies aren't about standing on a stage and telling kids how to be successful.

They're about helping students understand that failure is not a definition of who they are.

John connects with students because he knows what it feels like to struggle. To lack confidence. To make mistakes. To fail repeatedly. And to need someone else to believe in you before you're able to believe in yourself.

His mission is to help students develop a healthier relationship with failure, build resilience and confidence, understand the importance of mentors, and recognize that the difficult chapters of their lives don't have to determine how their story ends.

Failure doesn't define you—How you respond to it does.
